Does Kentucky have zero-deductible windshield coverage?

Kentucky Revised Statute 304.20-060 addresses motor vehicle glass claims. For Kentucky motor vehicle policies that provide comprehensive coverage or other-than-collision coverage, a claim for motor vehicle glass only must provide complete coverage for repair or replacement without regard to any deductible or minimum amount.

The statute defines motor vehicle glass broadly, including windshields, doors and windows, related installation materials and, when a covered damage event requires replacement, necessary Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) calibration services. The current amendments apply to insurance policies issued or renewed on or after April 2, 2024.

Can I choose the shop that performs the work?

For a motor vehicle glass claim covered under KRS 304.20-060, the customer may not be required to use a particular motor vehicle glass repair shop as a condition of receiving claim payment or benefits. You may choose United AutoGlass and work with your insurer to verify coverage and claim procedures.

ADAS disclosures and calibration documentation

KRS 367.361 addresses insured auto glass work when a vehicle may have ADAS equipment. Before contracting for replacement, an auto glass shop must inform the insured whether the vehicle has ADAS, whether calibration is required to make the systems operable or meet original manufacturer specifications, and whether the shop can perform the calibration. After service, the customer must receive documentation about the glass work and, when applicable, the calibration status.

The law also prohibits gifts or inducements to influence the selection of a shop and prohibits claims of “no cost” service unless the statement can be verified for the insured vehicle.

Windshield safety glass requirements

KRS 189.120 requires approved safety glazing material in windshields and specified vehicle windows. Professional glass selection and installation help maintain visibility, containment and the safety performance designed for the vehicle.
